How Dental Insurance Works

Every dental plan has its own set of fees, stipulations, and coverage levels. It is important that you familiarize yourself with your unique policy in order to understand how it works. In the meantime, here is a general overview of the coverage that is standard among many PPO plans:

  • Preventive care is often up to 100% covered.
  • Minor services are typically up to 80% covered.
  • Major treatments may be around 50% covered.
  • Cosmetic (elective) procedures are usually not covered.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Dental and medical insurance have different areas of focus:

  • Dental insurance covers treatments that benefit the health of your teeth and gums, including routine services like cleanings, checkups, fillings, crowns, and more.
  • Medical insurance focuses on systemic, head-to-toe health. It does not usually cover routine dental care. However, it might apply to some major oral services, such as certain types of surgery.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Whether our practice is in your insurance network or outside of it, we invite you to find out how we can assist you as you seek to get the greatest value out of your benefits.

In-Network Coverage

To be in-network means that we have a contract with certain dental insurance companies. These agreements are meant to control prices and encourage a specific level of care. Very often, out-of-pocket fees are lowest at in-network offices. Our dental practice is proud to be in-network with:

  • Always Care (Unum/Starmount)
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • Cigna
  • GEHA
  • Guardian
  • Humana
  • MetLife
  • United Healthcare
  • Careington
  • Delta Dental

Out-of-Network

If you have a PPO dental insurance plan, you can use it at virtually any dental practice, even those that are not in your network! We welcome out-of-network patients, and you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you can get out of your benefits when you visit us. Remember, the most important thing is to choose a dental practice that is worthy of your trust and respect.
